ETS now officially supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)!

RHEL is a Linux distribution targeted toward commercial users. It is designed to offers a supported, hardened, enterprise environment that delivers on more efficient operational costs, better reliability, and availability, and better scalability.

The current version of RHEL on campus is 7.

Information will be added here as our Linux service expands.  Your feedback is also appreciated and will be used to inform our growth in this area.

Servers

Servers provide network services for people or other computers. Examples are web and database servers. They are generally installed without a graphical interface and do not provide a desktop for personal software use.

For Linux servers, ETS will provide:

  • Virtual Machine Provisioning with RHEL 7
  • Updates/Patching
  • Security Monitoring
  • Service Monitoring
  • User Management
  • Service configuration (e.g.)
    • Firewall
    • Apache
    • MySQL/Maria
    • Certificates
  • Backup and Restore

On your physical workstation, we can provide

  • RHEL 7 with Gnome 3.7 Desktop

  • Access with University NetId
  • SSH via VPN

Red Hat Linux Training

Satellite Update

Satellite is the Red Hat management product designed to keep Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments running efficiently and securely. ITS uses Red Hat’s Satellite to monitor the University’s Linux infrastructure and ensure that it remains patched and up-to-date.

ETS will be installing SSH Keys on the School of Engineering Linux servers so that we can leverage this service. If you are running a Linux server and are not registered with Satellite, one of the members of the Linux Administrator’s group will contact you shortly to discuss installing the necessary keys.
